European Dominance: Sweden and Switzerland Capture Gold at Tepic Elite16
European beach volleyball has flexed its muscles on the international stage, with reigning European champions David Åhman/Jonatan Hellvig of Sweden and Nina Brunner/Tanja Hüberli of Switzerland claiming gold medals at the Volleyball World Beach Pro Tour Elite16 event in Tepic, Mexico.
Swedish Duo Defends Tepic Title
Playing in just their second event of the season, Åhman and Hellvig continued their impressive form by securing their seventh Beach Pro Tour title. The Swedish pair completed an undefeated run through the tournament, winning all six of their matches while dropping just three sets along the way.
Their final showdown against Brazilians Andre Loyola and George Wanderley proved to be a thrilling contest, with the Europeans prevailing 2-1 (21-17, 19-21, 15-10). This victory marks their second consecutive title in Tepic, defending the crown they claimed in 2023, and follows their silver medal performance in Doha last month.
Swiss Champions Edge Dutch Rivals in Epic Final
The women’s event featured an all-European final as Switzerland’s Brunner and Hüberli faced off against the Netherlands’ Raisa Schoon and Katja Stam in a rematch of their 2021 EuroBeachVolley gold medal match.
The final lived up to expectations with both teams battling fiercely across three sets. The Swiss ultimately prevailed 2-1 (21-14, 19-21, 19-17) in a nail-biting finish, securing their first-ever Beach Pro Tour title and cementing their status as one of the world’s premier teams.
European Teams Dominate Tournament
Europe’s impressive showing extended beyond just the gold medals:
- Five European teams reached the semifinals in Mexico
- The Netherlands claimed silver in the women’s event
- Germany’s Nils Ehlers and Clemens Wickler narrowly missed the podium, finishing fourth after falling to Cuba’s Jorge Alayo and Noslen Diaz
- Italy’s Marta Menegatti and Valentina Gottardi came agonizingly close to bronze, pushing Brazil’s Carol Salgado and Bárbara Seixas to the limit before falling in a marathon tie-breaker (22-20, 21-23, 23-25)
Looking Ahead
The beach volleyball caravan now makes a massive journey across the globe, with the next Beach Pro Tour Challenge event set for Xiamen, China, from April 25-28. European teams will be looking to maintain their momentum as the road to Paris 2024 continues to intensify.
With such impressive performances in Mexico, European beach volleyball has sent a clear message that they are a force to be reckoned with on the international scene.
