German and Chilean Teams Triumph at Xiamen Beach Pro Tour Challenge
The Volleyball World Beach Pro Tour Challenge in Xiamen, China wrapped up Sunday with German and Chilean pairs claiming the gold medals, while American teams fell short of the podium despite strong showings throughout the tournament.
German Dominance in Women’s Competition
Second-seeded Karla Borger and Sandra Ittinger of Germany continued their impressive form, capturing gold with a convincing 22-20, 21-14 victory over ninth-seeded Swiss Olympians Anouk Verge-Depre and Joana Mader in the final.
Spain’s Daniela Alvarez and Tania Moreno, seeded 10th, secured the bronze medal by defeating eighth-seeded Lithuanians Aine Raupelyte and Monike Paulikiene in straight sets, 21-16, 21-16.
Grimalt Cousins’ Cinderella Run
The men’s tournament produced a remarkable underdog story as 18th-seeded qualifiers Esteban and Marco Grimalt of Chile battled their way to gold. The Grimalt cousins capped their impressive run with a comeback victory over 21st-seeded Frenchmen Youssef Krou and Arnaud Gauthier-Rat, 17-21, 21-18, 15-9.
This unexpected final featured two teams who defied the odds throughout the tournament, with the Chileans’ determination ultimately prevailing in a hard-fought three-setter.
Americans Fall Just Short of Medals
The United States came close to securing a podium finish, but fourth-seeded Chase Budinger and Miles Evans fell to Germany’s second-seeded Lukas Pfretzschner and Sven Winter in a thrilling bronze-medal match, 15-21, 21-15, 15-13.
Several American teams showed promise during the tournament:
- Hagen Smith and Logan Webber advanced through qualification and reached the quarterfinals
- Jordan Hoppe and James Shaw qualified for the main draw
- Third-seeded Theo Brunner and Trevor Crabb went 1-1 in pool play
- Women’s qualifiers Kylie Deberg and Hailey Harward impressed with a 2-0 pool play record
