Carol and Barbara Claim Gold in Dramatic Rio Elite16 Comeback

Brazil’s Carol Solberg and Barbara Seixas delivered a stunning performance at the Volleyball World Beach Pro Tour Elite16 event in Rio de Janeiro, overcoming a rocky start to claim the gold medal. After losing their first two matches, the experienced duo rallied with five consecutive victories, culminating in a dominant win in the final. With this triumph, Carol and Barbara are set to reclaim the world number one ranking when the FIVB updates its standings on Monday.

A Remarkable Turnaround

The Brazilian pair, seeded 11th in the tournament, faced early setbacks with losses in their opening matches. However, they quickly found their rhythm, showcasing their resilience and championship pedigree. Their gold medal victory marks their sixth Beach Pro Tour title and their 12th medal overall, further cementing their status as one of the sport’s most successful teams.

Gold Medal Match Dominance

In Sunday’s gold medal match at the iconic Copacabana Beach, Carol and Barbara faced USA’s Terese Cannon and Megan Kraft, who had defeated them earlier in Pool C. This time, the Brazilians left no doubt, cruising to a 2-0 (21-17, 21-18) victory.

Barbara was the standout performer, leading her team with 23 points, including the match-winning shot and two aces. Carol contributed 12 points, with two crucial kill blocks. On the American side, Kraft scored 14 points, while Cannon added 13. Despite entering the final undefeated, Cannon and Kraft were unable to overcome the home favorites, settling for silver—their third consecutive Elite16 medal after earning silver in Gstaad and bronze in Vienna earlier this year.

Bronze for Thamela and Victoria

In the bronze medal match, Brazil’s top-seeded Thamela Coradello and Victoria Lopes secured their third consecutive Elite16 podium finish with a 2-0 (21-19, 21-16) victory over Germany’s Sandra Ittlinger and Kim Van de Velde. Victoria led the way with 17 points, including two aces, while Thamela added 15 points, highlighted by two kill blocks.

Semifinal Action

The day began with Cannon and Kraft advancing to the final after a 2-0 (21-14, 21-16) semifinal win over Ittlinger and Van de Velde. Cannon was instrumental, scoring 20 points, while Kraft added 16, including three aces.

In the other semifinal, Carol and Barbara defeated their compatriots Thamela and Victoria in straight sets (21-14, 21-19). Carol was dominant, contributing 24 points, including seven kill blocks and an ace.

A Fitting Finale in Rio

The Rio Elite16 event provided a thrilling conclusion to the Beach Pro Tour season, with Carol and Barbara’s comeback victory serving as the highlight. Their ability to bounce back from early losses and dominate the final underscores their mental toughness and skill.

As the world’s top teams now look ahead to future competitions, Carol and Barbara’s triumph in Rio will be remembered as a testament to their enduring excellence and determination.
