Benesh and Partain avoid elimination and move forward in Adelaide

Playing a win-or-go-home match in the third round of pool play of the 2025 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championship on Monday, Americans Andy Benesh and Miles Partain celebrated their first victory in Adelaide and continue alive in the tournament.

With one victory and two losses, the Americans progressed as the third-best team in Pool H and now need to wait until the end of pool play to figure out if they will make it directly to the Round of 32 or if they will need to play in the lucky losers round.

Americans Fight Back

The Paris Olympians had a rough start to their campaign in Australia, going down to Latvia Martins Plavins and Kristians Fokerots and Czechia Ondrej Perusic and David Schweiner in their first two encounters. With that, they needed a win in their last pool match to rank third in the pool and progress to the elimination round, and that what they got, dominating Togo Koffi Kotoka and Kuamivi Samani to win 2-0 (21-9, 21-12).

Pool H Winner

Already qualified, Czechs and Latvians also met on Monday with the first place in the pool on the line, and defending champions Perusic and Schweiner came out on top, winning 2-0 (21-19, 21-12) to make it to the next round as the best team in the pool.

Other Pool Results

Three other pools also completed their schedules in the first session of matches on Monday. One of them, Pool J, had Qataris Cherif Younousse and Ahmed Tijan as the winners. The Tokyo Olympic medalists overcame young Austrians Tim Berger and Timo Hammarberg 2-0 (22-20, 21-12) to continue undefeated.

The other match of the pool had Swiss Yves Haussener and Julian Friedli beating Cubans Damian Gomez and Eblis Veranes also 2-0 (21-13, 21-18). The Europeans finished second and also made it to the Round of 32, while the Austrians were third and will wait until the conclusion of pool play to find out in which round they will play next.

Pool D had Brazilians Evandro Goncalves and Arthur Lanci as the winners. The Olympians survived a three-set battle with Germans Paul Henning and Lui Wust, winning 2-1 (21-17, 19-21, 15-13) to keep their record clean – ranked second, the Germans are also set to play in the Round of 32 on Wednesday.

Argentines Bautista Amieva and Maciel Bueno claimed the pool third and last spot in the elimination rounds with a 2-0 (21-14, 21-15) victory over Nicaraguans Ruben Mora and Dany Lopez.
