Rosarito Rags to Riches – Stam/Schoon win gold from the Qualifier!

Olympians Cherif Samba and Ahmed Tijan of Qatar, alongside Raisa Schoon and Katja Stam of the Netherlands, etched their names in gold at the prestigious Volleyball World Rosarito, Mexico, Elite 16 event.

On the women’s side, Schoon and Stam, seeded 13th, embarked on an impressive journey to clinch the title. Despite facing tough opposition, the Dutch pair demonstrated their mettle with victories over top-seeded Brazilians Duda Lisboa and Ana Patricia Silva and third-seeded Americans Kelly Claes and Betsi Flint. Their remarkable run culminated in a dominant performance in the final, where they triumphed over eighth-seeded Latvian Olympians Tina Graudina and Anastasija Kravcenoka.

For the men, despite facing an early setback with a loss in pool play to the formidable duo of Michael Bryl and Bartosz Losiak of Poland, Samba and Tijan showcased their resilience, ultimately emerging victorious when it mattered most. The Qatari pair displayed their prowess in a thrilling quarterfinal clash against Brazilians Andre Loyola and George Wanderly, securing a hard-fought victory in three sets. They continued their winning streak in the semifinals, exacting revenge on the Polish duo before clinching the gold with a sweeping victory over Alexander Brouwer and Robert Meeuswen of the Netherlands.

While the American contingent faced formidable challenges, several pairs showcased their talent and resilience throughout the tournament. Claes and Flint delivered a commendable performance, securing victories over formidable opponents before bowing out in the bronze-medal match. Despite facing early exits, teams like Brunner and Schalk and Bourne and Crabb demonstrated their competitive spirit, highlighting the depth of talent in American beach volleyball.
