History at Hamburg BPT for Victorious Mol and Sorum
Anders Mol and Christian Sørum may not have defended their Olympic title in Paris, but they cemented their legacy with a historic victory at the Volleyball World Beach Pro Tour Hamburg Elite16 on Sunday. The Norwegian duo, known as the “Beach Volley Vikings,” defeated Spanish legends Pablo Herrera and Adrián Gavira 2-0 (21-15, 21-11) in the gold medal match at the Am Rothenbaum Stadium, securing their 24th international title.
This victory places Mol and Sørum second on the all-time list of men’s beach volleyball teams, surpassing Americans Todd Rogers and Phil Dalhausser. Only Brazilians Ricardo Santos and Emanuel Rego, with 34 titles, remain ahead of them.
A Legacy of Dominance
Since teaming up in 2016, Mol and Sørum have been a force to reckon with, winning 24 gold medals in 60 international events and earning podium finishes in 38 of those tournaments. Their Hamburg triumph adds to an already stellar 2024 season, which includes gold in Vienna, bronze in Doha and Gstaad, and an Olympic bronze in Paris.
“It’s unbelievable to be mentioned alongside legends like Rogers, Dalhausser, Emanuel, and Ricardo,” Mol said with a laugh. “Seeing the Norwegian flag up there with Brazil and the USA in beach volleyball is surreal. But we’re not done yet—we want to keep pushing.”
Farewell to a Legend
The Hamburg final marked the end of an era as Spanish veteran Pablo Herrera retired from international competition. The 42-year-old, who competed in a record six Olympics and won silver in Athens 2004, leaves the sport with 28 international medals. His partner, Adrián Gavira, 36, will continue his career with a new teammate.
“Pablo and Adrián are incredible athletes and even better people off the court,” Sørum said. “It’s been an honor to share so many matches with them, especially this last one. We want to thank them for everything they’ve done for the sport.”
Dutch Duo Secures Bronze
In the bronze medal match, Dutch pair Stefan Boermans and Yorick de Groot defeated Italian Olympians Paolo Nicolai and Samuele Cottafava 2-0 (21-18, 21-13). This marked their first podium finish since June, when they took bronze at the Ostrava Elite16.
Boermans and De Groot, who finished fifth in their Olympic debut in Paris, have had a strong 2024 season. They claimed gold at the season-opening Doha Elite16 in March and added a bronze at the Stare Jablonki Challenge in June.
A Season to Remember
Mol and Sørum’s victory in Hamburg not only highlights their dominance but also underscores their resilience after falling short of Olympic gold. With 24 titles to their name and a hunger for more, the Beach Volley Vikings continue to inspire and elevate the sport of beach volleyball.
As the 2024 season progresses, the Norwegians remain a team to watch, with their sights set on further cementing their place among the all-time greats. Meanwhile, the retirement of Herrera serves as a poignant reminder of the enduring legacy and camaraderie that define beach volleyball.
