João Pessoa Elite16 Preview – Golden Olympians Get Back in the Sand

Two months after their triumphant victories at the Paris 2024 Olympics, beach volleyball’s reigning gold medalists are set to make their highly anticipated return to international competition. Brazil’s Eduarda ‘Duda’ Lisboa and Ana Patrícia Ramos, alongside Sweden’s David Åhman and Jonatan Hellvig, will headline the Volleyball World Beach Pro Tour João Pessoa Elite16, the ninth Elite16 event of the season. The tournament kicks off this Wednesday on the picturesque northeast coast of Brazil.

Duda and Ana Patrícia: Back on the Sand

Following their historic Olympic win, Duda and Ana Patrícia took a well-deserved break from training, spending time celebrating their achievement and engaging with fans across Brazil. The duo received numerous awards and participated in various events, soaking in the adoration of their home country.

“We decided to rest after Paris and only returned to training a little over two weeks ago,” Ana Patrícia shared. “It was incredible to feel the love and support from the Brazilian people. Now, we’re ready to get back to doing what we love most—playing beach volleyball.”

The Brazilians warmed up for the João Pessoa Elite16 by competing in a Brazilian Tour event at the same venue, where they claimed gold in their first tournament since Paris.

“I’m thrilled to be back on the court, doing what we love, and playing in front of our home fans,” Duda added. “Our goal now is to make the most of every tournament and enjoy these moments with our families. The support from Brazilians has been overwhelming, and we’re incredibly grateful.”

Duda and Ana Patrícia have fond memories of João Pessoa, having won last year’s Elite16 event at the same location. They are one of four teams from the Paris Olympics competing this week, alongside compatriots Bárbara Seixas and Carol Salgado, Lithuanians Monika Paulikiene and Aine Raupelyte, and Canadians Heather Bansley and Sophie Bukovec.

Åhman and Hellvig: Chasing Another Title

On the men’s side, Swedish stars David Åhman and Jonatan Hellvig are also making their first international appearance since their Olympic triumph. Like their Brazilian counterparts, the Swedes are no strangers to success in João Pessoa, having won the Elite16 event there in 2023.

Åhman and Hellvig will aim to extend their remarkable winning streak, which began with a victory at the Tepic Elite16 in April and continued through their gold medal performance in Paris. This week’s tournament marks their opportunity to secure a seventh consecutive international title.

Strong Field of Competitors

The João Pessoa Elite16 boasts a star-studded lineup, featuring four other men’s teams from the Paris Olympics:

  • Anders Mol and Christian Sørum of Norway, the bronze medalists.
  • Cherif Younousse and Ahmed Tijan of Qatar, who finished fourth.
  • Brazilian pairs Andre Loyola/George Wanderley and Evandro Gonçalves/Arthur Lanci.

Canadian Sam Schachter, who competed in Paris with Dan Dearing, will also be in action, this time partnering with Jonathan Pickett.

Tournament Schedule

The João Pessoa Elite16 begins on Wednesday with qualifiers for both men and women, determining the final four teams to advance to the main draw. Pool play will take place on Thursday and Friday, followed by the elimination rounds on Saturday. The tournament concludes on Sunday with the semifinals and medal matches.

As the Olympic champions return to the sand, fans can expect thrilling matches and high-level competition in João Pessoa. With the support of their home crowd, Duda and Ana Patrícia will look to add another title to their impressive resume, while Åhman and Hellvig aim to continue their dominance on the international stage.

Beach volleyball enthusiasts won’t want to miss this exciting event as the sport’s biggest stars showcase their skills once again!
